Keywords for Mobile Search
Google recently revealed that 1:7 searches are being performed on mobile phones, and that number is supposed to keep going up. More and more people are searching on the go, especially if they are searching for local information. The implications for SEO are huge, and you need to make sure your website is taking advantage of this newer type of search traffic.
Just like in traditional search, keywords are the cornerstone of the whole process. As it turns out, people searching from their mobile phones aren’t using exactly the same keywords as they would when using their home computers. Abbreviations are more common, and keyword phrases are likely to be short and sweet. People aren’t going to spend the time to type out a large query when a shorter one will give them the same result.
Mobile searchers are also more likely to search for local businesses. If you want your business found, you need to focus on local SEO techniques. Use location-based keywords, “Philadelphia computer repairs” instead of just “computer repairs”. You also need to set up your business page through Google Local and other location-based search services. The more you put into these pages, the easier it will be for consumers to find your business when they are searching from their phones.
If you’re interested in what local search terms are most effective for your industry, the Google Keyword Tool. Under Advanced Options, you can choose between desktop and laptop searches or mobile searches (there are a couple options here, if you are looking for very specific information). By performing a mobile-based search through the keyword tool, you can see what local consumers are really looking for when they perform a search on their phone and then use that information to perfect your own local SEO campaign.
While you are getting your SEO mobile-search ready, don’t forget to prepare your website for mobile traffic. If you won’t be creating a mobile version of your site, you should at least make your site mobile-friendly. Put your most popular links near the top of your site, to make it easier for people to reach. Use a simple layout with easy to use navigation. Not every phone has touch-screen capabilities, and you want to make using your website as easy as possible. You should also include a search feature, allowing users to find what they’re after without needing to dig through your site.
Your website needs to be ready for mobile traffic. More and more people are using the internet on the go, and if you want your website to benefit from that, your site has to be capable of being easily found through localized search terms. Use mobile-search optimized keywords along with your regular keywords to create an SEO plan that brings in both traditional web users and mobile phone users.
